For many natives of Wisconsin during the mid 20th century, supper club dining was a bedrock of family and social gatherings. These fine-dining restaurants were always family-owned, served (overly) generous portions of fried, freshwater fish (perch, walleye, bluegill), steaks, broasted chicken, along with the much-sought-after salad bar and relish tray. Wisconsin cheese and butter were the centerpiece of the appetizer portion of the meal.
People dressed up when they went to supper clubs. Supper clubs provided hard-working Wisconsinites with a venue to relax in the evening or after a long work-week with friends, family, bar acquaintances (and of course the bartender and staff) over rounds of brandy old fashioneds or cold Wisconsin beer until their table was ready. (Wine drinkers were usually met with a jug of Riunite or Ernest & Julio Gallo.) On special occasions, the party might reconvene at the bar after dinner for a round of Brandy Alexanders, Grasshoppers or Pink Ladies.
Similar to independent retailers on Main Street, most family-owned supper clubs were squeezed out of the modern economy over the past decades by large companies and chain restaurants who offered cheaper prices and faster dining experiences to an ever more harried consumer.
For this reason, we are honored to welcome you and your family and friends to Dick & Dolly’s vacation rental property, home to the iconic Dick & Dolly’s Supper Club from 1966-1991. It is our goal to provide you with all the comforts of luxury lodging while transporting you back to the mid 20th century supper club ambience of lake country in northern Wisconsin.
